Frequently asked questions
Is OCR really done in my browser?
Yes. The text recognition program (Tesseract) runs on your device. The first time, your browser downloads it and the language data from this site, a few megabytes; your PDF and its pages are never sent anywhere.
Which languages can it recognize?
English, Simplified and Traditional Chinese, Vietnamese, Japanese, Korean, Spanish, German and French. It uses the language of the page you are on.
How accurate is it?
Clean, straight scans give the best results. Check the recognized text before you rely on it, especially numbers and small print.
What happens to pages that already have text?
Only scanned pages, and pictures of text, are recognized. Pages with real text can be edited straight away with Edit text.
